Hummer H1

The Hummer H1 is basically a HMMWV built for civilian use; it has no armor or weapons fittings. However, the drive-train, frame, body, suspension, etc., are exactly the same. The H1 differs from the HMMWV in having a civilian interior, including trim, comfortable seats, stereo, and air conditioning as standard options. As a result of its commercial use, features introduced in the civilian Hummer have been incorporated into improved military versions. The H1's electrical system is 12 volts, with the two batteries wired in parallel. The HMMWV runs off a 24V system, where the two batteries are run in series to generate 24 volts.

Hummer H2 SUT

While there is little mechanical difference between the original Hummer H2 SUV wagon and the pickup truck version -- the Hummer H2 SUT -- the latter comes with a flexible pickup bed, similar to the Cadillac Escalade EXT, the Chevrolet Avalanche, the GMC Envoy XUV. Another notable change is the reloaction of the spare tire from the rear cargo area to the swing-open tailgate.

The SUT is a 4-door sport-utility truck that easily converts from a 5-passenger SUV with a 3.2-ft. cargo box to a 2-passenger pickup pickup truck with a 6-ft. cargo box. At a base price just over $52,000, the SUT is loaded with standard features, plus some great options that send it right over the top.

Porsche Cayenne

Porsche have certainly done their best to disguise the fact that the 3.2-litre V6 engine is a Volkswagen Group powerplant. Cosmetically, the top end looks pure Porsche with exposed pipes from the inlet manifold mirroring the style of the V8 engines that power the more serious Cayenne versions. This is in fact the first V6 ever to appear in a roadgoing Porsche, the flat-six engine found in the 911 apparently not fitting into the Cayennes cavernous engine bay.

The powerplant isnt exactly the same as the Touaregs however, Porsche revising the intake manifolds and fitting a freer breathing exhaust system such that the Cayenne is a significant 30bhp up on its distant cousin at 247bhp. Still, with 2160kg to haul about, the Cayenne 3.2 was never going to be a particularly rapid car. Break out the timing gear and so it proves, the big Porsche stopping the digits at 8.

Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989, and marked a major departure from previous Land Rover vehicles by targeting the passenger and family 4x4 market. Although this market barely existed when the Discovery was designed, the timing was perfect for the British market which quickly took to the new vehicle.

Unlike Land Rover's previous products, the Discovery was capable of competing against the family car, boasting a comfortable ride and an interior designed by Sir Terrence Conran. It could also compete in terms of power and performance with the now-famous Rover 3.5l V8. For a diesel option, the 200TDi direct-injection turbo diesel engine was introduced. This boasted impressive economy and best-in-class performance, although it was slightly noisier than diesels in competing vehicles.

Chevrolet Suburban

The year 2000 saw the big 'burban's rebirth, just in time to battle Ford's massive new Excursion. Slightly shorter than its predecessor, the new Suburban is packaged more efficiently, preserving its vast interior room, and comes in base, mid-level LS and leather-lined LT trim levels.

As before, the Suburban shares much of its styling and powerteams with GM's full-size pickups (revamped in 1999) on which they're based and are again available in 1500 and heavier-duty 2500 series. GM's new family of V8 truck engines were drafted for Suburban duty. The 1500 is powered by the Vortec 5300 V8 that pours out 285 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque from its 5.3 liters, an impressive 30 horses more than the Vortec 5700 engine it replaces.

And even more thrust is provided for the Suburban 2500, which features the Vortec 6000 sporting 300 horses and 355 lb-ft of twist. Ready to work, a properly equipped Suburban 2500 can tow up to 10,500 pounds. And keeping with tradition, buyers have a choice of two- or four-wheel drive.

Ford SVT F150

Here's the basic description: The Lightning is based on the short-wheelbase, standard cab, flareside, two-wheel drive version of the F-150; in other words, the littlest one. Under the hood goes a 5.4-liter SOHC V-8, suitably pumped up with a supercharger and intercooler, and cranking out a not-inconsiderable 380 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 450 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,250 rpm. It's fitted with a four-speed automatic, and the final drive is 3.73:1 with a hefty 9.25-inch ring gear working on a limited-slip differential.

There are big vented disc brakes at all four corners, 12.1-inch diameter in front with twin-piston calipers, 13.1-inch in the rear with single-piston calipers (the rear discs are larger to accommodate a parking brake mechanism within the inner diameter), and ABS is standard equipment. The suspension is suitably lowered and firmed up, with big Bilstein shock absorbers and front and rear anti-roll bars. Wheels are five-spoke 18 x 9.5-inch, mounting unidirectional Goodyear Eagle F1-GS tires, sized P295/45ZR18.
